UNDERSTANDING NATIONAL CREDIT FRAMEWORK: EXCERPTS FROM CBSE CIRCULAR AND ACROSTIC ON ‘CREDIT’

  • A High-Level Committee (HLC) constituted by the Government of India has formulated National Credit Framework (NCrF). NCrF is an enabling framework that lays down basic principles of creditization of learning encompassing three main components viz. credits earned from academic grade, skill programme and relevant experience. The framework enables establishment of equivalence and mobility between general education, both formal and non-formal, and vocational education for lifelong learning, recognition of prior learning, multiple entry and exit, and continuous professional development. It also includes a mechanism for transfer of credits.

  • The NCrF is the framework formulated for a unified credit accumulation and transfer for all forms of education in India...For the purpose of credit calculations under NCrF, 30 notional learning hours will be counted as one Credit...The students may take additional courses/ programs/subjects/projects beyond 40 credits to get additional credits for the same.

  • The total learning hours can be creditised, subject to assessment, and may include class room teaching/ learning, laboratory work/ innovation labs/ class projects/ assignments/ tutorials; sports and games, yoga, physical activities, performing arts, music, handicraft work, social work, NCC, bagless days; examinations/ class tests/ quizzes/ assessments; vocational education, training and skilling, minor/ major project work/ field visits in skill education as well as on the job training (OJT)/ internship/ apprenticeship/ Experiential learning including relevant experience and professional levels acquired etc.

C: Creating system of education to quantify and assess the amount of learning acquired a student at mastery level called 'earned credit'

R: Rate of learning ( effort + time) may vary but mastery over prescribed content-assignments / skills / activities / training is must for requisite credits-earning to qualify and get certified

E: Establishing academic equivalence between vocational / skilling courses and general education or academic courses to facilitate mobility between the two education systems is the purpose

D: Downward extension of higher education credits-based assessment to school level to track each learner

I: Indian credit assessment system at school level for normal student (average learner or medium-paced learner) requires 12,00 hours for complete yearly academic course equating to 40 credits to be earned by each student as decided by National Credit Framework (ncrf)

T: To ensure universal access to education from pre-primary to Grade 12 and integrating it with global higher education is the over-arching aim with criterion of 40 credits per year spread over different subject areas is the criterion
