World Puppetry Day was commemorated on March 21, 2026, to pay tribute to the timeless craft of puppetry, support puppeteers, and celebrate puppet theater across the globe. Established by UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) in 2002, the inaugural celebration took place in 2003, aiming to bring together artists and enhance awareness of this captivating storytelling art form.

The day is filled with live performances, workshops, and exhibitions, often centered around a specific message or theme. National centers of UNIMA and artists worldwide lead the celebrations, hosting various local events. One such event was held in Varanasi coordinated by Mihilesh Dubey who was earlier active in Rajasthan conducting educational and community awareness workshops.

World Puppetry Day is marked by puppet festivals, contributions to puppet organizations, crafting puppets, or enjoying a puppet show. In some communities, puppet performances are staged to honor the day, reminding everyone of this versatile and endangered art form. It is believed that puppets have existed for nearly 4000 years across almost every civilization. Today, puppets come in a myriad of shapes and sizes, used to convey a wide array of stories.

In India, there is a need to encourage puppetry at the foundational stage since it can transform classrooms into engaging inclusive learning environments. Puppets serve as approachable mediators, simplifying complex concepts, building vocabulary, and fostering emotional intelligence. By animating lessons, teachers capture students' attention, encourage shy learners to participate, and turn stories into memorable, interactive experiences that significantly enhance retention and classroom engagement, I feel.
