Today, June 3, is being observed as the World Bicycle day to create awareness about the importance of the utility of riding a bicycle which is not only good for one’s health but also good for the environment as it is a zero pollution mode of transportation, as held by the experts.
The World Bicycle Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly due to its 'versatility, uniqueness and longevity' bicycle as a means of local transport for being the most 'affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport.' According to WHO, bicycle as means of transport reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and even death.
The United Nations proclaimed World Bicycle Day is being observed since 2018 to urge the use of bicyles as as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport as well as a part of positive life style. During the current pandemic crisis, bicycle is is considered to safe means to move around.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health equity.
“For the poorest urban sector, who often cannot afford private vehicles, walking and cycling can provide a form of transport while reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and even death” adds WHO at its website.
